Ethiopia: E-Government Procurement System Delivers Significant Gains

The Public Procurement and Property Authority (PPPA) announced that its e-Government Procurement (e-GP) system facilitated over 22,000 tenders during the past fiscal year, resulting in a total transaction value of Birr 320 billion.

Tadesse Kebede, the e-GP Project Manager, highlighted the system’s rapid growth since its inception in 2022. From a modest start with nine institutions and 22 tenders, the platform has expanded to encompass 74 institutions and processed transactions worth Birr 320 billion in the past year.

A key benefit of the e-GP system is increased competition, particularly among micro and small enterprises. Tadesse noted a 25% boost in competition, leading to reduced costs and streamlined bidding processes. The platform’s capacity to accommodate up to 150 bidders per auction has fostered a vibrant private sector environment.

A wide range of stakeholders, including universities, bidders, auditors, and government entities, are now utilizing the platform. The PPPA is further developing the e-GP system. A feasibility study is currently underway to expedite its implementation and maximize its potential.
