Addis Ababa Sees Rise in Waste Recycling During 2023/24 Fiscal Year

Addis Ababa City Sanitation Management Agency reported progress in waste recycling during the first nine months of the 2023/24 fiscal year. Out of the 587,000 tons of solid waste generated in the capital, 67,510 tons were recycled, representing an increase from previous years.

Ato Mulat Tegegn, Deputy Director General of the Agency, emphasized the importance of waste recycling in the city. He highlighted its positive impact, generating Birr 1.1 billion in revenue and creating job opportunities for 818 citizens.

Associations play a crucial role in waste recycling efforts. With approximately 3,000 members involved in activities such as plastic recycling, soil composting, and paper recycling, these groups significantly contributed to the city’s progress, earning over Birr 1.1 billion in the past nine months.

The recycling rate has risen from 3% in previous years to 11.5% during the reporting period. Recognizing the economic potential of waste recycling, the Agency expressed commitment to supporting initiatives that further increase income from these activities.

The Deputy Director noted the evolution from informal waste recycling practices to a structured subsidy system implemented by the city administration in 2021. This system provides financial incentives for associations involved in waste processing. For instance, associations producing soil fertilizer receive Birr 3 per kilogram, while those involved in paper and cardboard recycling receive subsidies ranging from Birr 1 to 50 cents per kilogram.

Despite the improvements, the Agency acknowledges the need for continued community engagement. Residents are encouraged to report instances of inappropriate waste disposal through the toll-free hotline 6199.
